The weather is (finally!) warming up and that means one thing: grilling season is here! If you tend to over indulge and are looking for a more fulfilling and nutritious meal, here are some great tips! 1. Add vegetables to your meat skewers Adding vegetables to your meat skewers is a great way to increase nutrition! To do this, simply prepare your skewers and meat as usual, but thread bite sized pieces of vegetables onto the skewer along with the meat. Tomato, mushroom, onion, and eggplant are all great options. Happy New Year! The beginning of a new year often seems like the perfect time to try and become healthier, especially after all the holiday celebrations. Many of us will resolve to completely change the way we eat, yet time and time again we see that restricting the food that we eat by 'going on a diet' isn't sustainable. We could be successful for a few days, weeks, or even months, but eventually we give in to the cravings and slip back to our old habits. There's no doubt this can be really discouraging, but the problem is with the diets - not with us! Nutrition is not one-size-fits-all, and it is so important to embrace and appreciate your individuality. Think about what you really enjoy eating and seek to build your diet around that and try the following: Christmas is a time to celebrate, spend quality time with loved ones and enjoy delicious festive foods. It is not a time for stressing about everything you put in your mouth. However, holiday parties and extravagant meals often leave people feeling dread and stressing over how much to eat and what is being offered. I'm not here to tell you the same old tips that make the rounds each year (choose a smaller plate, eat before the party, eating salad first, move away from food). Instead, I want to share practical tips that will help you enjoy the holiday season - without going without. But first, let me remind you... it's a time to celebrate food and togetherness, not the time to get down on ourselves for not following a 'perfect diet'. After all, there is NO such thing as a perfect diet. Let's ditch the deprivation and celebrate food this holiday season. Most of us have experienced digestive problems - whether it’s gas, bloating, reflux, constipation, or diarrhea. And needless to say, it is uncomfortable, not only physically but mentally! In fact, roughly 20 million Canadians deal with digestive issues. So if it is so common, why is it so difficult to talk about? According to society, it’s not cool to chat about bowel issues. Let’s break up with that idea - I’m here to tell you it’s good to talk about poop! Improving symptoms such as bowel irregularity, gas, and bloating is one of the many things a dietitian can help you with! It all starts with a conversation. Storytelling is a very important part of figuring out your digestive woes. If you’ve been dealing with gut issues, you may not have found the right person to hear you out. Doctors are extremely knowledgeable, but don’t always have the time to get the full story. As a dietitian, it is my job (and passion) to give your gut the much needed attention it deserves! With 2018 peeking it’s head out, a lot of us are starting to think about self-improvement. Many New Year’s resolutions aim to tackle issues around food. Maybe you would like to lose some weight or perhaps you want to cut back on sugar. Or maybe you just want to get better at meal planning in general. No matter what your nutrition ambition, think about whether your goal is sustainable. When February rolls around, it’s common to “give-in” to a craving or get too busy to follow through with your meal planning. So what can you do to ensure your food and nutrition goals will be achievable? Here are some tips from Marlee, our Registered Dietitian, for making long-term changes in the New Year: |
