Reduce Stress, Anxiety, Depression & Sleep BetterAccording to recent studies, massage has been shown to increase your body’s levels of serotonin which results in lowered stress levels. Other research has shown that an hour-long massage can reduce cortisol levels — the hormone in our body which is produced in response to stress — by around 30%. When cortisol levels are decreased, our serotonin, the body’s natural pain reliever, increases by roughly 28%, allowing us to better fight off anxiety, sadness, and pain. When it comes to depression, the relaxing environment and human contact inherent with a massage has been proven to relieve the symptoms of being depressed. Being relaxed then causes your nervous system to react with a lower heart rate and higher-quality breathing, both of which lead to better sleep.

Relieve Neck, Back & Shoulder Pain
A study from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health has shown patients suffering from chronic neck pain had more functionality, saw an improvement in their symptoms, and didn’t increase their medication consumption when compared to other patients who were given just a self-care-book. Massage therapy is also a sound choice for relieving inflammation, which is a typical cause of pinched nerves in the neck. If you have a pinched nerve in your shoulder, studies have shown massage therapy can have a positive effect in relieving chronic shoulder pain. As for back pain, the increased circulation a massage brings allows scar tissue to be broken down more easily by the therapist’s strokes and helps heal and repair the affected area quicker.

Relieve Migraine HeadachesStudies have shown promising signs of the efficacy a massage may have on relieving migraines. One such study showed that migraine sufferers who received massage treatment reduced the occurrence of their migraines by 34%, compared to only 7% in the control group. Since neck tension can trigger headaches or migraines, reducing that tension is believed to have a correlation with a decrease in the frequency of migraines and an improvement in the symptoms associated with them. This is great news as migraines are an especially prevalent problem in Calgary due to our Chinooks, which have been proven to cause or trigger migraines in a study by the American Academy of Neurology.

Increase Circulation & Lower Blood Pressure
In 2014, 17.7% of Canadians aged 12 and older (5.3 million people) reported being diagnosed with high blood pressure. One way the multitude of people suffering from this problem can treat it is through massage therapy, which has been proven to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. When it comes to increasing circulation, researchers at the University of Illinois determined vascular function in people who had received a massage but not exercised improved, leading them to believe that massage has benefits for people despite what type of activity levels they engage in. As for how massage increases circulation, the manual manipulations applied by a massage therapist helps move blood through the body while stimulating nerve receptors which cause blood vessels to open up more.

Improve Flexibility & MobilityGoing hand in hand with boosted circulation, massage therapy can help repair muscle damage, which is one of the main reasons people suffer from limited mobility. By increasing blood flow in the body, more essential vitamins and minerals are delivered to affected areas which can speed up recovery. One of the other ways mobility is improved is through the breaking down of scar tissue, or muscle adhesions. The manual manipulation of these restrictive buildups allows for nutrient-rich blood to replenish the injured or inflamed area, reducing swelling and creating easier joint and muscle movement. Flexibility is similarly achieved with the added bonuses of relaxing and stretching specific muscles and joints. Once it becomes easier to move, you’ll be able to move more, and in ways you forgot was possible.

Recover From Injury & Surgery Faster
A massage can help increase tissue metabolism by maximizing the amount of nutrients and oxygen an injured area receives which helps make injured muscles healthier by improving circulation. This also helps speed up the healing process and reduces discomfort during the rehabilitation phase, which allows for further progression in rebuilding your strength and stamina after suffering an injury to a specific part of the body. By applying pressure with their hands, our massage therapists are able to improve the circulation in a given spot on the body by warming up the surrounding muscles. The preceding can also help a patient who is just recovering from surgery. According to a review of 16 major studies on the topic in the medical journal Pain Medicine, massage therapy can effectively reduce the severity of pain and anxiety experienced by those who have recently undergone surgery. This is achieved by reducing the surrounding discomfort of an affected area and better re-aligning muscles and joints after an operation.

Decrease Toxins & Improve Your Immune SystemThe physical stimulation from a massage helps flush out unwanted toxins and metabolic waste in your tissue by dissolving and eliminating the current build up found within them. Once these toxins are out of the tissue, they enter the bloodstream and ultimately end up in the toilet. Because a massage increases your circulation, that second part of the process is enhanced, and toxins are able to leave your body in a more timely manner. Researchers from Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles also found that massage can improve your immune system. In their study, it was noted that people who received a massage had an increased number of lymphocytes — the white blood cells which are crucial in defending the body from disease. The study also found that massage subjects had a lower level of the inflammation-related substance cytokine and lower cortisol levels (the hormone responsible for stress).

Reduce Cancer Side Effects
According to the Canadian Cancer Society massage therapy is one of the most complementary therapies used by people living with cancer. A number of clinical studies have shown massage therapy can reduce the side effects of cancer or cancer treatments such as stress, nausea, pain, fatigue, and depression. Some people fear a massage may actually spread cancer cells via the lymphatic system, but research has proven this is not the case as cancer develops and spreads due to genetic mutations and other body processes.

Remove Dead Skin Cells, Improve Skin ToneThe friction caused by a massage eliminates the top layer of dead skin cells found on your body, the ones which make your skin look unhealthy and dull. Once the newer cells begin to take root, your skin begins to take on a natural glow thanks to the increased vitamins it’s able to soak in. This then leads to easier and healthier cell regeneration. The improved elasticity manual manipulation brings along with it also increases the natural oils produced by your skin to give it more suppleness, and by dilating the surface capillaries it improves your skin’s tone and colour.
